EU Postpones Retaliatory Measures Against US Tariffs
(MENAFN) Brussels has decided to postpone its retaliatory actions in response to US tariffs until early August, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
She emphasized that the European Union is focused on negotiating a trade agreement with its transatlantic counterpart.
On Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced intentions to introduce an additional 30% tariff on goods imported from the EU and Mexico, as part of his wider strategy to tackle trade imbalances with major partners.
These tariffs, set to take effect on August 1, would be imposed alongside already existing sector-specific duties, including the general 25% tariff on steel, aluminum, and automobile imports implemented earlier this year.
The following day, von der Leyen confirmed ongoing discussions with the White House in light of Washington’s tariff declaration.
“We will therefore extend the suspension of our countermeasures until early August. At the same time, we will continue preparing further countermeasures to ensure we are always ready,” she stated.
The initial set of EU retaliatory measures, which targeted around $25 billion worth of US steel and aluminum imports, had been suspended in April for a 90-day period to support trade talks. This suspension was due to expire on Monday.
