Borrell Warns EU Against Viewing US as Key Ally
In an interview with a broadcaster last week, Borrell remarked that he “doesn’t know what more [US President Donald] Trump needs to do for us to understand that the United States and Europe are not the allies they once were.”
He also addressed Trump’s worries that Europe’s nuclear powers – France and the UK – might eventually have governments less favorable to Washington. “There are many people who don’t want to accept this reality” because it is still assumed that the US is the EU’s main ally, “but it no longer is,” the ex-diplomat stated.
Borrell further noted US visa restrictions imposed on five Europeans, including former internal market commissioner Thierry Breton, whom American officials accused of leading legislative efforts aimed at disadvantaging US technology corporations.
At the heart of the dispute are the EU’s Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act, which place strict requirements on major online platforms, most of which are US-based. European officials, however, have defended these measures, presenting them as essential to safeguarding European sovereignty.
