Austria Says Ukraine’s EU Membership Remains Distant Prospect

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s goal of joining the European Union in the near future is unrealistic, according to Austrian Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer.

President Vladimir Zelensky has previously pushed for Ukraine to become a member by 2027, claiming the country will be technically ready to join by next year.

Membership, Marterbauer emphasized, is “a step-by-step process” that “will not be finished within two or three years, or whatever the timeline may be.”

Speaking to reporters ahead of a Eurogroup meeting in Brussels, he also noted that a recently approved €90 billion ($106 billion) aid package is “very important” for Ukraine’s integration into the bloc.

These remarks stand in contrast to Zelensky’s repeated insistence, which frames rapid EU membership as a key security guarantee to be included in any peace agreement with Russia.

Several senior EU figures have dismissed the accelerated timeline. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that “Ukraine's accession on January 1, 2027, is out of the question,” pointing out that the process often takes many years, if not decades.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas acknowledged that member states are “not ready to give a concrete date,” while Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics confirmed there is “no readiness to accept a date” among EU leaders.
