EU, South Korea Finalize Major Digital Trade Pact at Brussels Summit

(MENAFN) The European Union and South Korea formally signed a new Digital Trade Agreement on Wednesday, marking a significant step in expanding economic cooperation in the digital sector.

According to official statements, the deal reflects both sides' commitment to advancing an open, transparent, and rules-based global trading system.

The agreement was concluded during the 11th EU-South Korea Summit in Brussels, where European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

Officials said the new accord builds upon the EU-South Korea Free Trade Agreement, which has been in force since 2011, by introducing legally binding standards governing digital commerce.

Among its provisions, the agreement recognizes the legal status and enforceability of electronic contracts and facilitates the use of electronic signatures in cross-border transactions.

The pact is expected to create new opportunities for consumers and businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, while strengthening trust in the digital marketplace through enhanced online consumer protection measures.
