EU Sanctions Proposal Targets India-Based Entities Amid Trade Talks
The proposed measures, which would represent the EU’s 21st round of sanctions related to Russia, focus on sectors including energy, financial services, cryptocurrency activities, trade, and fisheries, according to statements from European officials.
As part of the package, the EU is also seeking to tighten export-control restrictions and add around 50 companies to its sanctions framework. According to the bloc’s foreign policy chief, the proposed list includes entities operating in several countries, “including entities based in China, Türkiye, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, UAE and India.”
The specific identities of the India-based organizations and the reasons for their inclusion have not yet been publicly disclosed.
Before the sanctions can take effect, all 27 EU member states must unanimously approve the proposal. Reports indicate that a final decision is expected by mid-July.
The package also contains additional measures related to Russian energy exports, including a temporary freeze on the existing Russian oil price cap and new restrictions concerning the resale of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers to Russia.
The inclusion of Indian entities in EU sanctions measures is not unprecedented. However, the timing has drawn attention because it coincides with ongoing efforts to complete a broad trade agreement reached with India earlier this year.
The deal, which European officials have described as the “mother of all deals,” emerged after years of complex negotiations that originally began in 2007 and were revived in pursuit of stronger economic ties between the two sides.
