Netherlands, EU Move to Shield ICC From US Sanctions

(MENAFN) The Netherlands is mobilizing European allies to defend the International Criminal Court (ICC) against newly imposed US sanctions, Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen announced.

Berendsen laid out the stance in a post on X. “Together with our EU partners, we continue to work to protect the ICC’s independence in the face of sanctions,” Berendsen said.

He added that he had spoken with European Commissioner Maria Luis Albuquerque about how the European Commission can back the tribunal. “We underlined the importance of EU operators’ continued service to the ICC,” he added.

Sanctions landed within hours of Nobel announcement
Washington imposed the measures on the court on Oct. 9, only hours after former ICC judge Navi Pillay was named winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

The ICC swiftly rejected the sanctions, calling them an attack on the rule of law. It also appealed to its member states to act to keep the institution running.

Pillay, a South African jurist, sat on the ICC’s Appeals Chamber from 2003 to 2008. The Nobel recognized her work in international criminal justice.

Pressure on the court has escalated
The latest penalties come after a sustained US push against the tribunal. That pressure intensified after the court issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, over alleged war crimes in Gaza.

In August, Washington had already targeted ICC judges and prosecutors with sanctions, including court President Tomoko Akane.
